Salmon have sustained our families for millennia and hold a fundamental social, dietary, and spiritual significance as a gift from Mother Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Settlers have had many issues with our inherent right to fish for salmon and to provide for our people. Since the 1700s, settlers have continually sought to control this fishery in various ways. Within the three Mi&#8217;gmaq communities of northern Gespe&#8217;gewa&#8217;gi, several events have aimed to restrict, or even prevent, Mi&#8217;gmaq access to this millennia-old resource We are all familiar with stories of wildlife officers pressuring the Mi&#8217;gmaq and attempting to deny them access to what we consider more than just a resource: a deep and sacred relationship<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/983A96F4-1513-45B2-8C44-54B686CD75D8#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This story culminated on June 11, 1981, when the unthinkable happened. We all know how officers of the <em>S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec<\/em> stormed the community of Listuguj in a futile attempt to force the Mi&#8217;gmaq to relinquish their salmon fishery. However, today we recognize and honour those who stood toe-to-toe against a colonial agenda to dismantle our livelihoods. The event was widely covered by local, regional, and national media outlets. Filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin produced a remarkable documentary about it, Incident at Restigouche, released in 1984<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/983A96F4-1513-45B2-8C44-54B686CD75D8#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Mi&#8217;gmawei Mawio\u2019mi Secretariat and Advocacy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defence of Mi&#8217;gmaq rights was central to the Secretariat&#8217;s creation. From the outset, its various units were established to deepen our knowledge of our history and to understand it through our own perspective. For too long, this history has been taught through others&#8217; eyes, contributing to the marginalization of our knowledge and, at times, to condescending judgments of the sacred relationships we maintain with the elements of our environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretariat is therefore a tool the Mi&#8217;gmaq have created to ensure the existence of an institution that protects their interests against encroachments on our territory by third parties. It is an organization that works diligently to protect and defend our rights at all levels, particularly in dealings with provincial and federal governments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretariat has undertaken a wide range of activities to protect Mi&#8217;gmaq rights. These include the land use plan Ta\u2019n Gespe\u2019gewa\u2019gi Tliango\u2019tesnen (TGT)<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/983A96F4-1513-45B2-8C44-54B686CD75D8#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>, led by Ango&#8217;tmeq Nm&#8217;tginen, and agreements reached through negotiations led by Agnutmatesnu, including Rights and Reconciliation Agreements (RRA) with Gespeg and Gesgapegiag<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/983A96F4-1513-45B2-8C44-54B686CD75D8#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>, among others<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mi&#8217;gmaq people are a resilient nation. Although the events in Listuguj were traumatic for those who experienced them firsthand, Migwite\u2019tm is a day when we all embody the spirit to fight for our rights and way of life. These events marked a turning point, strengthening ties among the three communities and unifying our voices to ensure that such events never happen again.
