Our Name
Mi’gmawei Mawiomi means a gathering of the Mi’gmaq people.
MM Vision Statement
The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi is empowered and mandated as defined by the Governing Councils of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj to represent and to protect the Mi’gmaq nation within Gespe’gewa’gi on matters of aboriginal, treaty and inherent rights.
Asserting our inalienable rights and jurisdiction over the Gespe’gewa’gi territory through self-determination and nation status are the goals we envision to sustain our families, youth and elders toward the next seven (7) generations.
Agreed by the consensus this 18th day of March, 2003 at Listuguj, Gespe’gewa’gi territory.
Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Principles of Engagement
Let it known that we the people of the seventh district of the Mi’gmaq Nation known as Gespe’gewa’gi have never ceded our lands and waters and have unextinguished Aboriginal rights, title and treaty rights which we exercise throughout our territory. We hold the inherent right of self-determination to be an inalienable right. Our rights are the cornerstone upon which we continue to govern ourselves according to Mi’gmaq spirituality, tradition, culture and custom.
We further hold that the three communities of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj who together with the consent of their Chiefs and Councils have elected to join a common cause which will not abrogate their right to be autonomously governed by their respective Chiefs and Councils. This is in keeping with our ancient tradition of autonomous Mi’gmaq communities who have historically gathered for reasons that benefit the whole nation without distracting from their independence as self-governing entities.
This union of consensual, autonomous, self-governing Mi’gmaq Nation communities lends to a host of political and economical opportunities that are in keeping with the goals and aspirations of addressing the common concerns of our communities. It is the further purpose of this alliance to voluntarily address common political action and partnerships through alliances between two or more communities or all communities for the ultimate benefit of our people.
This union (the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi) shall be the instrument of those who have forged this alliance and they will have the ultimate authority regarding the constitution, structure, policies and priorities of the union as cited in the Political Accord signed at Listuguj, August 4th, 2000.
The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi hereby agrees and consents to the Declaration of Principles herein agreed by consensus of the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi representing the three communities of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg, and Listuguj on this 18th day of March 2003.
MM Mission Statement
The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi was founded upon the spirit and intent of the Political Accord of 2000 consented among the Gespe’gewa’gi Mi’gmaq governing councils of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg, and Listuguj.
The Mi’gmaq nation, having inhabited this territory since time immemorial have inalienable title to the land, surrounding waters and have un-extinguished aboriginal rights, title, and treaty rights throughout the territory.
It is, therefore, our mission to uphold, reaffirm and respect the treaty and aboriginal rights and aspirations of our people by rebuilding the nation through repatriation of lands, resources and surrounding waters.
We will forge alliances to support the pursuit of all paths to Mi’gmaq self-determination by engaged strategic national and international partnerships in economic, social, traditional, cultural and other nation-building developments as deemed necessary by the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi.
Unanimous and in solidarity, the 18th day of March 2003 executed at Listuguj, Gespe’gewa’gi territory.
