Consultation & Accommodation Agreement on Hydrocarbons
Important Note:
The MMS does not facilitate any oil exploration, or encourage any company to drill in Gespe’gewa’gi.
The negotiations team is currently in the negotiating process of developing a Consultation and Accommodation Agreement on Hydrocarbon with the Government of Québec.
This agreement will push the Government of Québec to consult the Mi’gmaq people concerning various hydrocarbon activities.
The Mi’gmaq people need to know what is happening on the territory. In this case, which companies are getting licenses to obtain hydrocarbons.
This agreement will allow the us to be well informed of any exploration activities on the territory.
Exploration activity requires an exploration license, which is given by the Government of Québec.
We are asking for the Government of Québec to consult the Mi’gmaq people before any exploration licenses are given, by starting with a formal written notice to the Ango’tmeq Nm’tginen.
Background
In Gespe’gewa’gi, over 200 Hydrocarbon Exploration Licenses have been issued by Quebec.
The Mi’gmaq and the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi have never been consulted on any Exploration Licenses.
The Mi’gmaq must be consulted about how our land is being used.
Major developers include Pieridae, Marzcorp, Junex, and a host of smaller active licenses.
