The Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat (MMS) is the administrative body that carries out the work set out by the Assembly of the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi (MM) which includes the Chiefs and Councillors of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg, and Listuguj.
The logo representing both the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi and its Secretariat is intimately connected to our Mi’gmaq history, culture and territory, Gespe’gewa’gi.
The main beige beaded strip is a Wampum Belt, it is used to record agreements that are of particular significance with regards to treaties and covenants made between Indigenous and European settlers.
In the middle, shooting up from on top of the Wampum Belt is a Traditional Mi’gmaq Chief Headdress, it is surrounded by Fiddleheads and Ferns, which are bountiful in the Mi’gmaq territory and used as food and medicine.
Behind that is the Rising Sun, as the Mi’gmaq are the keepers of the Eastern Door. We are the first to greet the rising sun.
The 3 symbols on the Wampum Belt represent the 3 communities of Gesgapegiag, Gespeg, and Listuguj.
