Working in Collaboration with Other MMS Units

None of the MMS units work independently. Instead, they all work as a team to develop programs and services for our community members, all in the spirit of MAWLUGUTIGW, which in Mi’gmaq means:

 
  • “Together as one, blending all our energies into one” 
                        and
 
  • “Agreeing to work together.”  
 
This philosophy is certainly true of the Operations Unit.  
 
One very important way in which the Director of Operations contributes to the overall mission and vision of the MM is by coordinating the annual Mi’gmaq Writers Award each year. A prize is awarded to a writer 17 and younger, and another to a writer 18 and older. The goal of the awarding these prizes is to uncover notable Mi’gmaq writers who have an interest in expressing themselves through stories that pass down Mi’gmaq teachings through storytelling.  Winners receive great media coverage and also a prize of money.
 
In addition to the Writers Award, the Director of Operations, along with other Operations staff, may be involved in helping other Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat (MMS) units and managers in many ways:
 
 
  • Working with MM leadership and MMS senior management in setting priorities so that the MM’s mission and objectives can be met
 
  • Supporting the specific work of the MMS Executive Director/Nutewistoq by assisting him as needed with the Chiefs Executive Committee, the Elders Committee and various other leadership working groups
 
  • Acting as the Executive Director’s designate upon request, including handling certain negotiations for contract work for MMS as directed
 
  • Assembly planning, invitations, and coordination
 
  • Performing editorial duties
 
  • Writing feature articles for Gespisiq, the MMS magazine
 
  • Assisting with community workshops and information sessions for our members
 
  • Working with the Communications Coordinator to keep the MMS website up to date and comprehensive
 
  • Assisting the Consultation and Accommodation Unit with meetings, community notifications and other logistics needs. 
In carrying out these duties, the Director of Operations is often assisted by the Operations Executive Assistant.
